| GLORIA EXERCITVS "The Glory of the Army" |
As noted on my page found here - GLORIA EXERCITVS COINS, these humble little coins make up one of my favorite areas of collecting.
As a number of emperors had discovered (too late), sitting on the throne of Rome depended in a large part on the support of its army. As Imperator (the supreme commander of the army), the emperor had to have the support of his forces. Lose that support, and you risk losing your head....literally.
The GLORIA EXERCITVS coins were a small, but important recognition given to the army by Constantine and his family, thereby making them an interesting study in the use of Roman coins as a tool of propaganda.
While the basic design of the coins are very similar: Two soldiers with either one or two standards, there is an infinite variety of subtle little differences in the way the details were cut. It is these differences that make this an interesting and challenging area of study.
